The Tier-Upper
By Lamont Stewart

March 1988 Helke Elementary School

After that exciting assembly, Lamont and his friends headed back to class. Michael Poleman was straggling behind.

Meanwhile, beneath them, someone was monitoring the entire school. "That kid has awesome power. If I can get him on my side, then Magic-El won't have any power over me. I'll use one of his friends for bait."

Michael passes the giant map on the wall in the Media Center. When the wall next to it opens a little door. A strange man reaches out and grabs him before he can call out for help.

After Lamont and David went back to class, they looked around.

"Where is Michael?" David asked.

"I don't know. Let's go look for him," Lamont said.

They went back into the media center, and looked around.

"The last place I saw him was by the map," Bobby Wertz said.

They went over by the map, looking around it.

David knocked on a wall. "This wall sounds hollow."

"Yeah, but how do we open it?" Jacob McLaughlin said.

"I don't know," Lamont replied, leaning up against the map, his pen touching Rhode Island.

All of a sudden, the door opened. "Lets see what we see," David said.

They went inside, and the door closed behind them.

They went down some stairs, and looked over the grating and saw Michael tied to a pole. The person who did it was at his computer.

Lamont looked around and saw a small 3 ½ inch disk on the ground. He picked it up and put it in his pocket. "I have a plan."

"What is it?" Jacob asked.

"I go down the pole, and get him."

"That idea is excellent, if you're a preschooler," David said.

Lamont just went down the pole to try to help Michael, but as soon as he got to the bottom of the pole, he was tied up, too.

"I told him so," David smirked.

"Welcome, destined one," the man said.

"Huh?" Lamont said, surprised.

"What are ya talking about?" Micheal wondered.

"Your friend here comes from a certain blood line. A bloodline that will eventually kill my master. I want to control that blood line so I can control my master."

"Who are you?" Lamont asked.

"I am the Tier Upper, that is all you need to know."

The other three had escaped the lair, and went outside.

The Tier Upper had also opened up a hole outside, and raised out of the ground with the pole behind him. "Now you're mine."

"Think again," said Lamont, who was standing at the top of the pole, untied, with Michael.

"I guess I underestimated you, but I..."

Just then, Magical-El-Play appeared. "Try to betray me, will ya?" She snapped her fingers and Tier Upper was encased in solid ice, and vanished. Then she turned to the five friends. "Your time will come."

They just stood there and watched as she vanished.

"I think she'll be back," Lamont commented
