The New Team
Epilogue
By Peter J. Smith

The bell rang, but we'd received an early mark. I'd already left the classroom, gotten my backpack and slung it over my shoulder when I saw Teresa and Aaron walking towards me.

"Hey," Teresa smiled.

I nodded. "How you doing?"

"Fine, I suppose. A little shocked, but fine."

Aaron looked at Teresa. "A little shocked? My heart almost stopped twice in science just thinking about it." By now, we'd wandered away from the classroom and began to walk down the small hill to the carpark.

"No, you're right," I said to Aaron. "It's more than just shocked. You know, for the first time in my entire life I really feel like somebody. Not just some dumb guy on the street. I'm somebody important, someone with purpose, someone worthwhile."

Aaron grinned. "You're totally right," he agreed. "Same with me."

"Do you want to come with us to the Youth Centre?" asked Teresa.

"The place up the road from here?" I asked.

She nodded. "Yep. Billy and Kim invited us there after school. I think for a little training, but also in case we needed to talk to someone. Jason said he'd be there, too."

I looked up sharply. "Jason?" I asked. "Sure, I'll be there."

Aaron smiled. "You like him, don't you?"

"I'm not sure. He's just so friendly, so kind and caring and yet serious. I mean, I hardly know the guy, and I have this feeling that someday we'll be the best of friends. I really opened up to him this afternoon at the, uh, you know."

"Yeah," replied Teresa, "we noticed. And I can tell these things – you two will become great friends."

"I hope so," I replied, not really paying attention to where I was going. Consequently, I bumped into Damien who was sitting by the path, unlocking his bike from the bike racks.

"Hey," he called angrily. "Who the hell do you think you are?"

I kept walking until I was far enough from him to respond truthfully. Turning to Aaron and Teresa, I said, "I don't have to think, 'cause I know." Pausing, I smiled. "I know that I'm a Power Ranger."
